The clay-court season continues as the ATP World Tour makes a stop in Munich for the BMW Open this week. Defending champion Mikhail Youzhny and first-time entrant Stanislas Wawrinka are set to lead the 32-player field.
World No. 13 Mikhail Youzhny makes his return to competition after a disappointing effort in Monte-Carlo. The 28-year-old Russian failed to win a match, having lost in the opening round to Florian Mayer in three sets.
Youzhny is scheduled to take part in his eighth BMW Open. After finishing runner-up in 2007 and 2009, the veteran captured the championship title over Marin Cilic in 2010. He is set to enter the event with a modest 7-6 season record.
The defending champion is located in the same half of the draw as (4) Marcos Baghdatis, (5) Florian Mayer and (6) Sergiy Stakhovsky. Other combatants in the section include: Julien Benneteau, Grigor Dimitrov, Denis Istomin, Teymuraz Gabashvili, Philipp Petzschner, Potito Starace and Barcelona semifinalist Ivan Dodig.
Youzhny is scheduled to open his title defense against German wildcard Matthias Bachinger. The closest seed to the Russian is Stakhovsky, who looms as a possible quarterfinal opponent. Passage through the early rounds may set a likely meeting with Baghdatis or Mayer in the semifinal.
First-time entrant Stanislas Wawrinka leads the bottom half of the draw, seeded ahead of (3) Marin Cilic, (7) Nikolay Davydenko and (8) Philipp Kohlschreiber. Additional players in the section are: Simone Bolelli, Daniel Brands, Robin Haase, Andrey Golubev and Radek Stepanek.
The Swiss will begin his debut run against wildcard Dustin Brown.
