Defending champion Mikhail Youzhny and Marcos Baghdatis reached the second round of the BMW Open, after recording straight-set victories over respective opponents Matthias Bachinger and Julien Benneteau.
(1) Mikhail Youzhny def. (WC) Matthias Bachinger 7-5, 6-2
Top seed Mikhail Youzhny won his opener against wildcard Matthias Bachinger early Monday, 7-5, 6-2. The Russian tallied three aces and four service breaks, en route to a straight-set success in an hour and 38 minutes of play.
“It was a little tough today because I haven’t played a lot of matches this year and being in Moscow I haven’t had a chance to practice on clay," Youzhny explained. "I like the atmosphere but it’s a totally different feeling to last year when I came into the tournament having spent more time on the clay and having played Rome.”
He is next to face either Ivan Dodig or Philipp Petzschner in the round of 16.
(4) Marcos Baghdatis def. Julien Bennteau 7-6(2), 6-3
Fourth seed Marcos Baghdatis successfully snapped a six-match losing streak, having downed veteran Julien Benneteau on Monday. The 25-year-old Cypriot collected a dozen aces and three breaks of serve in an hour and 41 minutes. The victory marks the first for Baghdatis since making the Rotterdam quarterfinal in February.
He will take on Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the quarterfinal. The Bulgarian took out wildcard Andreas Beck in the opening round, 6-1, 6-4.
