World No. 6 David Ferrer advanced to his second final in as many weeks, after downing fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro on Saturday. He will take on World No. 1 Rafael Nadal for the championship title Sunday afternoon.
Fourth seed David Ferrer made his fourth ATP World Tour championship final this season, having upended eighth seed Nicolas Almagro in straight sets. The 29-year-old secured three of 12 break point chances, en route to a 6-3, 6-4 semifinal victory in an hour and 37 minutes.
“Nicolas is going through a good moment but I played really well, maybe it was my best match of the week today," Ferrer explained, post-match.
"I won in two sets but it was a tough match. I returned really well throughout the match and was very focused. I am on good form, playing with a lot of confidence and I’m winning a lot of matches on clay which is important as it’s my favorite surface.”
Ferrer will square off against top seed Rafael Nadal for the championship title. The two met a week ago for the crown in Monte-Carlo, where Nadal came away with the win in straight sets.
“Rafa is the best clay-court player in the history of the game," said the World No. 6. "I will try and do better than last week, play my best tennis and fight until the end.”
Nadal won his semifinal against unseeded Ivan Dodig in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
