Rafael Nadal crushes Gael Monfils in the Barcelona quarterfinals on Friday. Nadal awaits either Feliciano Lopez or Ivan Dodig.
Rafael Nadal delivered his best performance of the week and destroyed Gael Monfils 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Barcelona Open BancSabadell on Friday afternoon. Nadal dropped only eight points in eight service games while advancing after just one hour and 15 minutes.
Monfils opened the match with a hold for 1-0, but it all fell apart when he squandered a 40-0 advantage in the third game. Nadal won five points in a row to break and eventually won five games in a row as well before his opponent finally got back on the scoreboard for 2-5. The top-seeded Spaniard, who lost a mere three points in his first four service games, promptly finished off the opening frame of play at love.
Nadal continued to dictate play in the second thanks to a dominant forehand. In fact, it progressed exactly as the first, with Monfils taking care of the first game before surrendering five straight. The ninth-ranked Frenchman again had multiple game points to hold at 1-1 and he did the same at 1-3, but he simply could not convert at the critical times. After seeing Monfils hold for 2-5, Nadal closed it out on serve to 30 and clinched victory when the underdog struck an errant backhand.
In search of his sixth Barcelona title in his last six appearances, Nadal won 70 percent of his second-serve return points and won almost half of the points even when Monfils put in a first delivery. Nadal fired one ace and double-faulted once en route to a semifinal clash against either Feliciano Lopez or Ivan Dodig.
