Ivan Dodig continues his surprising trek through the Barcelona draw as he takes out Feliciano Lopez on Friday. Next up for Dodig is five-time champion Rafael Nadal.
Ivan Dodig continued his amazing year by defeating Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Barcelona Open BancSabadell on Friday. The winner needed one hour and 56 minutes to improve his 2011 record to 15-7 and set up a semifinal clash against Rafael Nadal.
Dodig came in with a ton of momentum having previously taken out seeds Robin Soderling and Milos Raonic, and he played like it early. The world No. 56 seized a quick break and never came close to letting it go throughout the opening set. Dodig lost a mere six points in his first five service games and finished off the set with ease at 5-4.
Lopez, however, turned things around in the second. The 42nd-ranked Spaniard survived a deuce game then struck for his first break of the day en route to a commanding 3-0 lead. Lopez had no trouble extending his advantage to 5-2, and at that point he broke for good measure to force a third set in style.
Both players managed to hold throughout most of the decisive set, but it was Dodig who eventually made for one more momentum swing. The final break of the afternoon came in the penultimate game of the match, as the unseeded Croat struck for a 5-4 lead. Dodig served out the match with ease to book his spot in the semifinals.
Lopez blasted 11 aces without double-faulting, but it was not quite enough for victory. Dodig also served well, firing six aces and no double-faults while putting in 66 percent of his first deliveries.
