Sixth seed Jurgen Melzer made the final eight in Barcelona, having rallied his way to a three-set victory over 11th seed Albert Montanes. The 29-year-old Austrian saved 13 of 15 break points en route to a 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2 victory in two hours and 4 minutes. Melzer, who will face 4th seed David Ferrer for the second time in as many weeks, tallied 7 aces during the match.
“I started off really well (in the Monte-Carlo semifinal) and then lost the momentum and my game. So, it’s nice to get the chance a week later to play him again and I’ll try my best to make it a little better than last week.
“I’m happy with my clay-court season so far, reaching the semis in Monte-Carlo and then being already in the quarterfinal here,” Melzer said. “I’ve been beating good players lately on clay and my confidence is high. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the clay-court season."
(8) Nicolas Almagro def. Nikolay Davydenko 7-6(2), 6-3

The 25-year-old Spaniard, who will crack the top 10 ranking on Monday, collected six aces and three service breaks through and hour and 38 minutes of competition.
Almagro will take on either former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero or qualifier Simone Vagnozzi for a spot in the semifinal.
