Rafael Nadal makes quick work of fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver on Wednesday in Barcelona. Nadal advances to a third-round meeting with Santiago Giraldo.
Rafael Nadal kicked off his Barcelona Open BancSabadell campaign with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Daniel Gimeno-Traver on Wednesday afternoon. Nadal needed just one hour and six minutes to record his ATP season-best 25th win and advance to the third round.
The world No. 1 took full control of his first-ever matchup against his fellow Spaniard right from the start. Nadal dropped seven points in four service games during the first set, but he never faced a break point and was absolutely dominant in the return game. Gimeno-Traver won only one of eight second-serve points before his opponent served out the opening frame of play at 5-1.
More of the same continued in the second, although Nadal picked up the pace on serve. Barcelona's No. 1 seed and five-time champion surrendered a mere three points in three service games and his fifth break of the day at 5-1 finished things off in style.
"The first match is always difficult and I managed to play at a high level against a player that is not easy," said Nadal, who now has one more victory in 2011 than both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. "I'm happy to be back at the Godo and to get through the first round, and I'm happy with the standard of play I had on court today."
Next up for Nadal is Santiago Giraldo, a three-set winner over Albert Ramos.
