Raonic handles Stepanek, Gasquet overcomes Chela Milos Raonic cruises past Radek Stepanek in straight sets on Tuesday in Barcelona. Richard Gasquet advances in more difficult fashion, taking out Juan Ignacio Chela in three.

    (15) Milos Raonic d. Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-2

Raonic did not have nearly as much trouble as he did with Stepanek in this season's first meeting between the two players. The 20-year-old Canadian, who prevailed 6-4, 6-7(10), 7-6(1) two months ago in Memphis, crushed Stepanek in just one hour and 14 minutes in round two of the Barcelona Open BancSabadell on Tuesday.

Although he served at a mere 44 percent in the first set, Raonic needed only one break to take an early advantage. The world No. 28 faced no break points while surrendering seven points in five service games. Stepanek went away quietly in the second frame of play. The 68th-ranked Czech dropped serve early and then completely lost the plot by getting broken at 2-4. Raonic closed out the proceedings with ease and capitalized on his first match point at 40-15 to advance. Barcelona's No. 15 seed will battle Simon Greul for a spot in round three.

    (9) Richard Gasquet d. Juan Ignacio Chela 2-6, 7-6, 6-4

Gasquet recovered from a set deficit to defeat Chela in two hours and 33 minutes on Tuesday in Barcelona. The ninth-seeded Frenchman looked out of his league against Chela on clay for a while, as he donated his own serve twice in the first set and converted none of his three break chances. Chela served out the opening frame of play at 5-2 and soon had a break-point opportunity that would have given him a chance to serve for a straight-set victory.

The 40th-ranked Argentine, however, failed to capitalize. Gasquet eventually held and forced a second-set tiebreaker, which he dominated seven points to two. Chela recovered and broke for a 3-1 lead in the final set, but service breaks proved to be the norm. Gasquet returned the favor for 2-3, added another for 4-3, threw it away for 4-4, and earned his third consecutive scalp of his opponent's serve for a 5-4 advantage. Finally, the world No. 17 made no mistake with the upper hand and finished off the proceedings at love. Next up for Gasquet is Blaz Kavcic.
