Davydenko downs Dolgopolov Former World No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko advanced to the second round of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell late Tuesday, following his straight-set victory over 10th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Veteran Nikolay Davydenko made a strong start to the tournament, having ousted 10th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov in the opening round, 6-4, 7-6(4). The Russian saved seven of 7 break points through an hour and 40 minutes of competition.

After losing a 3-0 advantage in the opening set, Davydenko regrouped to take a 5-3 edge. The 29-year-old was unable to close at 5-4, but broke back to seal the set in 38 minutes. A close second set contained no service breaks for either player. Davydenko went ahead 4-1 before Dolgopolov leveled to 4-4. After saving a set point, the Russian converted his first match point at 7-6.

Davydenko will take on qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin for a place in the round of 16. The Frenchman came through his opener against Andrey Kuznetsov, 6-2, 6-4.
