  • Murray leads bottom half in Barcelona

    4/18/11 4:41 AM | Kelli DeMario
Murray leads bottom half in Barcelona World No. 4 Andy Murray looks to continue his clay-court effort, as he heads to the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell this week. The Scot is set to enter the 56-player draw as the second seed.

World No. 4 Andy Murray made a strong showing in Monte-Carlo last week, having snapped a four-match losing streak entering into the tournament. The 23-year-old advanced to the semifinal, where he pushed eventual champion Rafael Nadal to three sets.

Murray is slated to take part in his fourth Barcelona tournament. He has a 1-3 record, with his only win recorded in 2006. Following his solid performance at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, the Scot is 9-5 for the 2011 season.

Murray has been placed in the same half of the draw as (4) David Ferrer, (6) Jurgen Melzer, (8) Nicolas Almagro, (10) Alexandr Dolgopolov, (11) Albert Montanes, (14) Kevin Anderson and (16) Juan Monaco. Additional players in the section include: Nikolay Davydenko, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Pablo Andujar, Victor Hanescu and Grigor Dimitrov.

After an opening-round bye, Murray will face either veteran Xavier Malisse or former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero. The nearest seed to the Scot is Monaco, who looms as a possible round of 16 opponent. Further progress through the draw may set a meeting with Dolgopolov or Almagro in the quarterfinal.

Should Murray move into the semifinal, he is likely to face Monte-Carlo finalist David Ferrer.

Andy's quarter of the draw looks alot trickier in Barcelona than it did in MC. Lots of good clay courters, Ferrer in the semi's and then Rafa once again. Might be
better to save the elbow.

I agree, even if Andy had the "easiest" draw in the world, if there ever is such a thing, I would say "Don't play!" There is something up with his elbow so why take the slightest risk?

Seems like Monaco has recovered from his fall the other day.

Someone's brought up last years Bacca draw which confused me seeing names of players that aren't on the 2012 draw. That's why I said it seemed as if Monaco had recovered from his ankle injury.

Monaco will not be playing this
