Tournament seed Juan Monaco made a successful start at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, with a straight-set victory over Grigor Dimitrov. The Argentine recorded his eighth win of the season late Monday.
Sixteenth seed Juan Monaco is safely through to round two in Barcelona, having ousted Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. The 27-year-old saved seven of 8 break points through an hour and 18 minutes of competition.
Monaco trailed 1-4 in the opening set, but regrouped to level at 4-4. The Argentine continued his effort to take the final two games of the set. Monaco led 2-0 in the second set, then captured an insurance break to 4-1. A final break of serve came at 5-1, as the 16th seed tallied five service breaks in total.
Monaco is scheduled to take on qualifier Simone Vagnozzi in the next round. The Italian passed through to the second round, following the retirement of first-round opponent Fabio Fognini.
