Santiago Giraldo takes out Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets on Monday in Barcelona. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez is also through to the second round, having dismissed Denis Istomin.
Santiago Giraldo d. (13) Thomaz Bellucci 7-5, 6-3
Bellucci became the first seeded casualty at the Barcelona Open BancSabadell, falling to Giraldo in opening-round action on Monday afternoon. Giraldo broke serve five times and advanced after one hour and 46 minutes of play. The 54th-ranked Colombian struggled with his own serve early and saw his opponent serve for the first set at 5-4. Giraldo, though, broke to stay alive and then seized another break at 6-5 to gain the upper hand.
Bellucci, who dropped to a mediocre 10-9 for the season, continued to misfire in set two. The 32nd-ranked Brazilian recovered from an early break, but he donated his serve again at 3-4. That allowed Giraldo to serve for the match, and he successfully did so despite facing a break point in the process. Next up for Giraldo is Albert Ramos, a winner in three hours and 11 minutes over Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.
(12) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez d. Denis Istomin 7-6(6), 6-3
Garcia-Lopez threw away lead after lead, but he recovered every time and dismissed Istomin in one hour and 33 minutes during first-round action on Monday. Four straight breaks took place from 3-3 to 5-5 in the first set, with Garcia-Lopez giving back the break each time. The 26th-ranked Spaniard then failed to consolidate mini-breaks on two different occasions early in the ensuing tiebreaker, but he won the final two points thanks to Istomin errors and finally took it 8-6.
The trend appeared to continue in set two, as Istomin fell behind 4-2 only to recover the break one game later. This time, though, the 55th-ranked Uzbek could not stay within striking distance. He gave away his serve once more and Garcia-Lopez served out the proceedings with ease at 5-3. Barcelona's No. 12 seed converted match point after a brutal rally with a perfect forehand volley. Garcia-Lopez awaits either Feliciano Lopez or Mikhail Kukushkin in round two.
