  • Melzer handles Almagro, gets Federer next

    4/14/11 6:20 PM | Ricky Dimon
Melzer handles Almagro, gets Federer next Nicolas Almagro fails to recover from a three-hour marathon and falls to Jurgen Melzer in straight sets on Thursday in Monte-Carlo. Melzer advances to the quarterfinals and will go up against Roger Federer.

Nicolas Almagro did not have much left in the tank after a 6-7(6), 7-5, 7-6(10) victory over Maximo Gonzalez that last exactly three hours. Jurgen Melzer capitalized and hammered Almagro 6-1, 6-4 in the third round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Thursday evening.

Almagro got off to an absolutely dreadful start and won only 11 total points in the entire first set. The 12th-ranked Spaniard won fewer than half of his first and second-serve points and never earned a break chance of his own. Melzer converted all three of his break points, the third of which finished off the set in style at 5-1.

Seemingly content to give away the opening frame of play after the initial break, Almagro appeared to turn the corner mentally in set two. Monte-Carlo's No. 9 seed seized an immediate break for 1-0, but he gave it right back. Both players held from there en route to a 5-4 Melzer lead, at which point rain forced them to move to a different court.

Although Melzer wanted to continue without interruption, the ninth-ranked Austrian wasted no time upon the resumption and he broke at love for victory. A reeling Almagro sprayed a forehand well wide at 0-40 to end the proceedings.

Melzer needed one hour and 30 minutes to set up a quarterfinal clash with Roger Federer. The No. 7 seed, a 2010 French Open semifinalist, is 0-3 lifetime against the third-ranked Swiss.
