Frederico Gil advanced to his first career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarterfinal, after taking out eighth seed Gael Monfils on Thursday. The Portuguese qualifier came through in straight sets, 7-6(6), 6-2.
Qualifier Frederico Gil is through to his maiden Masters 1000 quarterfinal, having upset 8th seed Gael Monfils in the round of 16. The 26-year-old from Portugal had not secured consecutive Tour-level matches since May 2010, when he completed a run to the Estoril final.
Gil held ten of 10 service games en route to a 7-6(6), 6-2 victory in two hours and 1 minute of play.
A competitive set contained no breaks of serve for either player. Gil took key mini-breaks at 2-1 and 3-2 in the ensuing tie-break. The qualifier collected double-set point at 6-4, but was unable to convert either point. A third set point came at 7-6 for Gil, who closed the set as Monfils struck a forehand long.
Gil controlled the second set, holding Monfils to a mere two points on the return. He finished the set without facing a break point, having won 16 of 18 points on serve.
Gil is slated to face World No. 4 Andy Murray in the quarterfinal. The Scot defeated 16th seed Gilles Simon in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-3.
