    Gil downs Monfils to make Monte-Carlo quarterfinal Frederico Gil advanced to his first career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarterfinal, after taking out eighth seed Gael Monfils on Thursday. The Portuguese qualifier came through in straight sets, 7-6(6), 6-2.

    Qualifier Frederico Gil is through to his maiden Masters 1000 quarterfinal, having upset 8th seed Gael Monfils in the round of 16. The 26-year-old from Portugal had not secured consecutive Tour-level matches since May 2010, when he completed a run to the Estoril final.

    Gil held ten of 10 service games en route to a 7-6(6), 6-2 victory in two hours and 1 minute of play.

    A competitive set contained no breaks of serve for either player. Gil took key mini-breaks at 2-1 and 3-2 in the ensuing tie-break. The qualifier collected double-set point at 6-4, but was unable to convert either point. A third set point came at 7-6 for Gil, who closed the set as Monfils struck a forehand long.

    Gil controlled the second set, holding Monfils to a mere two points on the return. He finished the set without facing a break point, having won 16 of 18 points on serve.

    Gil is slated to face World No. 4 Andy Murray in the quarterfinal. The Scot defeated 16th seed Gilles Simon in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-3.
