  • Murray makes strong statement in Monte-Carlo

    4/13/11 7:36 PM | Kelli DeMario
Murray makes strong statement in Monte-Carlo World No. 4 Andy Murray snapped a four-match losing streak at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, having upended veteran Radek Stepanek in straight sets. The third seed won his first match since the Australian Open.

World No. 4 Andy Murray improved his series lead to 4-1 over Czech Radek Stepanek late Wednesday. The 23-year-old, who had not won a match since January, came through the opening-round match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

Murray led 3-1 in the opening set, then secured an insurance break to 4-1 on a Stepanek error. Set point came quickly for the Scot, who closed the set on a backhand return winner. After losing a service break edge in set two, Murray regrouped to 5-4. At match point in the 10th game, the World No. 4 struck a well-place forehand to force a Stepanek error.

"I mean, I played great. Dominated the match from the second, third game. Was a wee bit tentative towards the end, which I think is probably natural. I went for it, hit the ball really clean, wasn't miss-hitting anything, moved really well, was really happy,” Murray said.

"I play well on clay. I think I can have good results on it if I play like I did today at the start. I'm going to try and keep that up. The more matches I play, the better my rhythm is going to get. I'm sure I can go deep in the big tournaments."

Murray completed the day with 7 aces, 26 winners and five of 8 break points converted.

He will take on 16th seed Gilles Simon in the round of 16. The Frenchman downed Albert Montanes in the second round, 6-3, 6-4.

Yeah, he looked great today. I hope he can keep on building his confidence throughout the clay season and also show up on grass with lots of confidence.

What's the statement : "I'm over my slumber and ready to play again"? He beat an old player way past his prime. Let's see how he does against Simon.
