Tournament seeds Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon are through to the round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, after recording straight-set victories over respective opponents Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Albert Montanes.
(8) Gael Monfils def. Daniel Gimeno Traver 7-5, 6-2
Eighth seed Gael Monfils made a successful return to action, having ousted Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. The Frenchman, sidelined for nearly two months with a left wrist injury, converted five of 14 break points through 93 minutes of play.
"I wasn't impressed by my game, but it was nice playing on centre court, though a bit strange for a start," Monfils confessed.. "Today I remained focused from the beginning till the end. I didn't do much during the match. I stayed back. I was very defensive. But I didn't give up any points. I didn't do much, but what I did was satisfactory."
He is slated to meet qualifier Frederico Gil in the next round. Gil took out Florian Mayer of Germany in round two, 7-5, 6-1.
(16) Gilles Simon def. Albert Montanes 6-3, 6-4
Sixteenth seed Gilles Simon made the last sixteen, following his straight-set win over Albert Montanes. The 26-year-old Frenchman converted four of 8 break points, en route to a 6-3, 6-4 victory in an hour and 33 minutes. With the second-round success, the World No. 24 is through to the Monte-Carlo round of 16 for the first time since his 2006 debut.
He will take on World No. 4 Andy Murray for a place in the quarterfinal. The Scot came through his opener over Radek Stepanek in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
