  • Melzer overcomes Haase, Cilic to face Federer

    4/13/11 8:10 PM | Ricky Dimon
Melzer overcomes Haase, Cilic to face Federer Jurgen Melzer comes back from a set down to roll over Robin Haase on Wednesday in Monte-Carlo. Marin Cilic advances to a meeting with Roger Federer when Pere Riba retires.

    (7) Jurgen Melzer d. Robin Haase 3-6, 6-1, 6-2

Melzer kicked of his campaign at the 2011 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters by dismissing Haase after one hour and 31 minutes of play on Wednesday. The ninth-ranked Austrian went into this match with a disappointing 7-6 record for the season and he got off to a slow start. Haase broke serve twice in the first set and that allowed him to serve out the opening frame of play at 5-3.

The 63rd-ranked Dutchman, however, could not sustain the momentum and he quickly went away. Melzer dropped a mere three games the entire rest of the way and he served at better than 80 percent in each of the final two sets. Monte-Carlo's No. 7 seed donated serve once in the third, but by that point he was giving his opponent a free lesson in all-around clay-court tennis and he had no trouble earning three breaks. Melzer sealed the deal on serve at 5-2 to set up a third-round encounter with Nicolas Almagro.

    (15) Marin Cilic d. (Q) Pere Riba 5-2, retired

Riba enjoyed a stellar week in Monte-Carlo by qualifying for the main draw and upsetting Potito Starace in the first round, but he never had a chance against Cilic on Wednesday. The Spaniard won a mere two points in three return games and called it quits 29 minutes into the match due to a right knee injury.

Cilic struck four aces without double-faulting during his short outing and he made 71 percent of his first serves. The 6'6'' Croat also seized two breaks, so he was in full control of things when it ended. Cilic, who crushed Filippo Volandri in round one, is now set for a meeting with world No. 3 Roger Federer.
