    Simon, Montanes advance in Monte-Carlo Tournament seed Gilles Simon is through to the second round at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, after taking out Thomaz Bellucci early Tuesday. The Frenchman is joined by Albert Montanes, who downed veteran Xavier Malisse.

    Sixteenth seed Gilles Simon is safely through to the second round, after upending Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets. The 26-year-old Frenchman held eight of 9 service games to seal a 6-3,6-2 win in 94 minutes. Bellucci surrendered serve four times during the match, unable to win more than 38% of his second-service points.

    "It was a good match. I'm happy," said the 16th seed. "It was a good fight. I knew I had to play well because every time I dropped my level of game, he was coming back. So it was a good first round."

    Simon will take on Albert Montanes for a spot in the round of 16.

    Albert Montanes def. Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-2

    World No. 23 Albert Montanes reached the second round with a routine victory over Xavier Malisse Tuesday afternoon. The veteran Spaniard converted four of 8 break point opportunities, en route to a 6-4, 6-2 success in and hour and 22 minutes. The 30-year-old extended his season record to 9-8, following a semifinal finish in Casablanca.
