Milos Raonic is through to the round of 16 in Monte-Carlo, following his straight-set victory over Ernests Gulbis. The Canadian is slated to face either fourth seed David Ferrer or Feliciano Lopez in the next round.
World No. 34 Milos Raonic continued his successful debut effort at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, having downed Ernests Gulbis in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. The 20-year-old Canadian collected 7 aces and four service breaks, en route to a second-round win in 91 minutes.
After losing an early service break lead, Raonic went ahead 4-3 in the opening set. Set point came in short order for the World No. 34, who closed the set with an unreturnable serve. A tighter second set contained no breaks for either player until 4-4. The Canadian led 5-4, as Gulbis struck a backhand over the baseline. Raonic held three set points, but was unable to convert. The Latvian pulled to 5-5, but failed to hold serve. The World No. 34 missed a fourth match point at 6-5, but converted the sixth on an ace.
“Knowing here it's tough to get the free points with the serve... I think I just played a sloppy first one, then after that just nerves got a bit in the way. But I was happy with how I sort of put it all together right after. I was able to reel off a few points in a row. I just tried as best as I could to keep it under control. I'm happy with the outcome," Raonic said, post-match.
He awaits the second-round winner between fellow Spaniards David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez.
