As the coaching search continues in fits and starts, Andy Murrray has made it clear to any potential mentor: my mum is part of the deal.
Judy Murray was the first coach for both of her tennis-playing sons and still offers advice as well as travelling part of the year with Andy, 23. No. 4 Murray has been without a full-time coach since last summer and has taken his time in worrying about a potential replacement.
For the moment, he's soldiering along with help from sponsor adidas and will work with top Australian Darren Cahill on a temporary basis at the clay Masters 1000 tournaments next month in Madrid and Rome plus the week before the start of Roland Garros.
But when a coaching choice is finally made by the Scot, the new man will have go be comfortable with the rest of Team Murray. British media reports indicate that the "mum" clause is not going down well with some potential candidates.
"Ninety-nine per cent of the time she speaks to me like anyone's mum would. And then there are times when I decide that I want to talk to her a bit about tennis, about the guys I'm working about, how I'm feeling. And she's there to listen and understand," Murray told local media.
"A lot of people I'm sure might find that very difficult to understand but she knows me well. She knows when to speak to me, when to be positive, when to tell me off and explain things to me. When I speak to her about tennis, it is when I need some help from her, some ideas, or even if it's just to listen to."
"It's not as if my mum is the only person I speak to about that. There are other people: my management team. Everyone is there to give advice, but I have to decide who I want."

Oh if a guy selects his Mum as a mentor he needs to grow up?

have to say i agree with holdserve. i would cut him some slack. if he feels his mum is a help, so be it. it's not like he's ranked really low anyway like most other players.

Maybe it will work with some guy, holdserve... but with this guy it does not work...!
But you can have different opinion... no problem

Seems to me there is some gender bias here. I remember Mirka getting flak when Federer got rid of coaching and was getting beaten by Nadal. Somehow there is a tendency to regard women as not legitimate mentors or decision makers.
Or, the prejudice maybe not against women but family members, when things aren't going well. Maybe Uncle Toni would have been derided/blamed if Rafa hadn't been doing so well?

Well....this was deep... holdserve :)
Andy... Andy... remember ?

Uncle Toni is probably 40% why Rafa is Rafa the tennis player, come on. I mean Judy is 100% why Murray is Murray is a human but Murray needs a good coach.

Is Judy to be blamed for his not having a good coach? If Andy has faith in her and takes inputs from her as part of his management team, I don't see why a good coach should have a problem unless he wants to be a dictator.
Even in the corporate setting, we do take inputs from different levels before a decision is taken. At the top, we have a Board where there are a certain number of directors representing different interests or having expertize in different areas.
Andy needs to click mentally with his coach and a coach who tries to understand Andy as a person is likely to be more successful than one who would simply try to train Andy without understanding him.
Djokovic's coach says that he understands that the player's personal life has a big role in determining how Djoko plays. So he tries to understand that part too. As Judy understands Andy as a person and his personal life, her inputs would likely be invaluable.

Rafa has a special situation, given the fact that his uncle is his coach. So he is keeping it in the family. Uncle Toni happens to know a good deal about tennis, helped develop and guide Rafa from a very early age, knows his game backwards and forwards and has his complete trust. He is lucky.
Obviously, Murray trusts him Mom completely. That is something that you cannot buy. So any coach who wants the job, will have to get approval from Judy. That's Murray's decision, not ours. It's his life, his career at stake.

Murray should have stuck with his Mum from day 1, he trusts her, she knows him better than anyone else and she is an expert at the game. I wonder about hiring a coach for a few years who then moves on to work with another player complete with your trade secrets and inside information. I'm sure there is a law against it.
