  • Kohlschreiber survives Golubev, gets Federer next

    4/11/11 6:29 AM | Ricky Dimon
Kohlschreiber survives Golubev, gets Federer next Philipp Kohlschreiber plays another three-setter and wins it over Andrey Golubev on Sunday in Monte-Carlo. Kohlschreiber is through to a second-round clash against Roger Federer.

Philipp Kohlschreiber apparently likes three-set matches. He certainly enjoyed one on Sunday in the first-round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.

Kohlschreiber played his 12th non-straight-setter in his 18th match of the season and outlasted Andrey Golubev 5-7, 7-6(6), 6-4 in two hours and 30 minutes. The German's come-from-behind victory set up a second-round tilt with world No. 3 Roger Federer.

Struggling with his serve in the early stages, Kohlschreiber double-faulted three times in set one and was broken twice. He earned one break of his own en route to 5-5, but Golubev's decisive blow in the 11th game allowed him to close out the opening frame of play at 6-5.

The competitors exchanged one break of serve each en route to a critical second-set tiebreaker, in which Kohlschreiber generally had the upper hand. Kohlschreiber, though, failed to convert a set point on his own serve at 6-5. Nonetheless, he recovered for 7-6 and got a look at a Golubev second serve to finish off the 'breaker 8-6.

Maintaining the momentum, Kohlschreiber broke for a 3-2 lead in the third. The world No. 32, however, promptly gave it right back for 3-3 but the see-saw nature of the match soon continued. Golubev dropped serve again at 4-4 and this time the unseeded Kazakh could not recover. He saw his opponent serve out the match in style at 5-4 to advance.

Kohlschreiber fired just two aces against six double-faults, but he once again relied on his experience in close matches. In addition to his 12 outings that have not ended in straight sets, Kohlschreiber has played just six straight-setters and four of those have featured at least one tiebreaker.
