Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga each passed tough first round opponents to move into the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters.
Richard Gasquet def. Denis Istomin 5-7, 6-3, 6-4
After a rocky start in his opening round match against Denis Istomin, Richard Gasquet found his footing to prevail in 3 sets. The Frenchman has had a well-documented struggle performing in front of a French-speaking crowd in Monte Carlo, but he had enough to get the job done on Monday.
Gasquet had trouble holding serve in the opening set, with the world No. 18 surrendering 3 break points. Istomin only fared marginally better at 2 service breaks, but a break at the very tail-end of the set secured the first set for the man for Uzbekistan.
After losing the first set, Gasquet tightened up his game on serve. He didn’t face another break point in the match and played economically with one break of Istomin’s serve in each set.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Juan Monaco 4-6, 6-3, 6-2
Gasquet’s countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was also forced to come back from a set down to take out Argentine clay-courter Juan Monaco. The story in this match was Monaco’s level of play. In the opening set, the Argentine played fantastic clay court tennis. He was able to run down even the hardest-hit groundstrokes from Tsonga, ultimately drawing errors from the Frenchman.
His level gradually started declining in the second set and Tsonga was able to dictate play much more efficiently. By the third set, Monaco was soundly outplayed.
Tsonga will take on Ivan Ljubicic in the second round.
