Cilic rolls in Monte-Carlo, Haase takes out Davydenko Marin Cilic cruises past Filippo Volandri on Monday in Monte-Carlo. Cilic is joined in the second round by Robin Haase, a three-set winner over Nikolay Davydenko.

    (15) Marin Cilic d. Filippo Volandri 6-2, 6-1

Not even his preferred clay-court surface could save Volandri, who flamed out to Cilic in just one hour and five minutes during first-round action at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Monday. Cilic did not face a single break point and he converted five breaks of his own to advance with ease. The No. 15 seed awaits either Potito Starace or Pere Riba in round two.

Cilic dropped a mere four points in his first four service games and he finished off the opening set in style with his second break of the evening at 5-2. More of the same continued in the second, as Volandri never came close to finding his game. The 76th-ranked Italian donated serve three more times, the last of which came at 5-2 to end the proceedings in appropriate fashion. Cilic finished three aces and one double-fault as he improved to 14-7 for his 2011 campaign.

    Robin Haase d. Nikolay Davydenko 7-5, 4-6, 6-4

A far crazier encounter was going on simultaneously, and it ended with Haase outlasting Davydenko after two hours and 44 minutes of play. This back-and-forth thriller featured a whopping 36 break points, 11 of which were converted. The third break of the evening came with Davydenko serving at 5-5 in the first set, and that allowed Haase to serve out the opening frame of play one game later. Haase then went up 4-2 in the second and had a break point for 5-2, but the Dutchman could not put his opponent away.

Davyenko held for 3-4 and ended up winning four straight games to force an improbable third set. The veteran Russian promptly went up a break in the third, but one more wild momentum swing was in hand. Haase immediately earned two consecutive breaks and this time he was not about to relinquish the advantage. The world No. 63 closed out the match on serve at 5-4, finishing with five aces and one double-fault as he booked a second-round clash against No. 7 seed Jurgen Melzer.
