Sweeting wins maiden title in Houston Wildcard Ryan Sweeting captured his first career ATP World Tour title on Sunday, following his championship victory over sixth seed Kei Nishikori. The 23-year-old American came through in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(4).

World No. 93 Ryan Sweeting became a first-time title winner Sunday afternoon, having upset Kei Nishikori at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston. The wildcard held ten of 11 service games through to a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory in nearly two hours of play.

Sweeting earned a key service break at 4-4 in the opening set, as Nishikori erred on the forehand. After missing his first set point, the American closed on another forehand error from his opponent.

Nishikori trailed 1-2 in the second, but pulled to hold three set points at 5-4. Sweeting saved all three to push the set into a tie-break. A costly backhand error from the World No. 61 gave the American a 5-3 advantage. Three championship points came for Sweeting, who sealed the title-winning run on a final forehand miss from Nishikori.

Sweeting ended the match with 5 aces and two of 5 break point chances converted.

That's kind of an upset.I thought Nishikori would win easily.
