Sixth seed Kei Nishikori is through to the championship match at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship, after taking out 7th seed Pablo Cuevas Saturday afternoon. He will face Ryan Sweeting for the title on Sunday.
(6) Kei Nishikori vs. (7) Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 7-5
Kei Nishikori advanced to his second ATP World Tour final, by virtue of his 6-3, 7-5 victory over 7th seed Pablo Cuevas. The 21-year-old converted five of 9 break point chances en route to a semifinal win in an hour and 44 minutes.
Nishikori gave up a break lead to 3-3 in the first set, but recovered to take three consecutive games. After losing a 2-0 edge in the second set, he secured a key service break at 5-5. The World No. 61 saved two break points at 6-5, then closed on a well-struck forehand winner.
(WC) Ryan Sweeting def. (Q) Ivo Karlovic 7-6(3), 6-3
Wildcard Ryan Sweeting made his first ATP World Tour final, following his straight-set victory over qualifier Ivo Karlovic. The World No. 93 held 11 of 11 service games through one hour and 39 minutes of play.
Sweeting won four consecutive points from 3-3 in the opening-set tie-break, taking full advantage of a physically hampered Karlovic. The veteran, who appeared to be suffering with a low-back strain, gifted the first mini-break with a forehand error. Another forehand error gave Sweeting a 4-3 edge in the second. After missing his first match point, the American closed as the Croatian struck an errant volley.
Sweeting ended the match with four of 4 break points saved and 88% of his first-service points captured.
