World No. 6 David Ferrer is set to lead a competitive quarter of the draw at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters this week. The 29-year-old veteran will enter the 56-player field as the fourth seed.
World No. 6 David Ferrer is slated to return to competition in Monte Carlo, following a quarterfinal finish at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami. The Spaniard has compiled a solid 17-4 record in 2011, with title-winning runs put together in Auckland and Acapulco.
Ferrer will be making his eighth appearance in Monte Carlo, seeded fourth after the departure of both World No. 2 Novak Djokovic and World No. 5 Robin Soderling. He is 17-7 at the tournament, having made the semifinal in 2010.
The 29-year-old has been placed in the same quarter of the draw as (6) Fernando Verdasco, (11) Viktor Troicki and (14) Alexandr Dolgopolov. Additional combatants in the section are: Kevin Anderson, Fabio Fognini, Ernests Gulbis, Michael Llodra, Feliciano Lopez, Milos Raonic, Tommy Robredo and Janko Tipsarevic.
After a first-round bye, Ferrer will open his bid against either fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez or Janko Tipsarevic. The closest seed to the World No. 6 is Dolgopolov, whom he would take on in the round of 16. Passage through the early rounds will likely set a quarterfinal battle with compatriot Verdasco.
Should Ferrer make the semifinal, he faces a probable clash with three-time finalist Roger Federer. The Swiss, seeded second this week, finished runner-up to World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
