Roger Federer is set to begin his 2011 clay-court season in Monte-Carlo. The third-ranked Swiss faces a potentially difficult opener against either Philipp Kohlschreiber or Andrey Golubev.
The spring clay-court season gets underway this weekend with the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, where Roger Federer headlines the field as the No. 2 seed.
Federer won't have any time to ease his way onto the slow stuff, because he awaits either Philipp Kohlschreiber or Andrey Golubev in the second round. The third-ranked Swiss will be a heavy favorite in that matchup regardless of opponent, but he won't take either one lightly and both are accomplished on clay. Kohlschreiber owns a 5-2 record in his last two French Opens (including a win over Novak Djokovic in 2009) and Golubev enjoyed a shock run to the Hamburg title last season.
The fourth quarter of the Monte-Carlo draw probably isn't the toughest, but Federer has drawn plenty of clay-court capable players. Seventh-seeded Jurgen Melzer, who also has a bye to round two, reached the semifinals last year at Roland Garros. Nicolas Almagro is the essence of a dirtball specialist and this section also includes Nikolay Davydenko, Marcel Granollers, Casablanca semifinalist Victor Hanescu, and current Casablanca finalist Potito Starace.
If the seeds hold to form, third-round matchups would pit Melzer against Almagro and Federer against Marin Cilic. Other intriguing first-round matchups to watch in addition to Kohlschreiber-Golubev include Almagro vs. Granollers and Davydenko vs. Robin Haase.
