  • Montanes moves on, Simon upended in Casablanca

    4/9/11 4:55 AM | Cheryl Murray
Gilles Simon will make his trip to Monte Carlo a bit early after a quarterfinal loss on Friday at the hands of Potito Starace.

Albert Montanes def. Fabio Fognini 7-6(1), 6-1

After a tight opening set, Spaniard Albert Montanes was able to dispatch of Italy’s Fabio Fognini in straight sets. The first set featured a pair of service breaks, one for each player. Montanes served at a dismal 38%, but Fognini was sufficiently poor on serve that the Spaniard did not pay a heavy price on serve. The tiebreak was somewhat anti-climactic, with the Italian winning a single point.

After losing the first set, Fognini lost steam in the second. The Italian won just 19 of 50 points in the set and secured a single game. Montanes will take on Pablo Andujar in the semifinals.

Potito Starace def. Gilles Simon 6-4, 3-6, 6-4

France’s Gilles Simon, the tournament No. 3 seed, took an early exit from Casablanca on Friday at the hands of Potito Starace. Their match was a typical clay court grind with a combined 9 breaks of serve in 3 sets. Simon had trouble on his own serve in the first set, facing 6 break points and surrendering 2. He fared better in the second, but by the third, he struggled again.

Starace will play Romania’s Victor Hanescu in Saturday’s other semifinal.
