  • Simon, Montanes headline quarterfinal field in Casablanca

    4/8/11 4:48 AM | Cheryl Murray
Simon, Montanes headline quarterfinal field in Casablanca The top seeds left in the draw, Albert Montanes and Gilles Simon contest the Casablanca quarterfinals on Friday.

    Albert Montanes vs. Fabio Fognini

Fabio Fognini very nearly found himself knocked out of Casablanca in the second round. Blaz Kavcic had a match point at 3-5 in the second set, but was unable to close out the match. Italy’s Fognini now has a chance at tournament top seed Albert Montanes.

The Spaniard holds a 2-1 head-to-head over Fognini. Their last meeting came a few months ago on the clay courts of Buenos Aires. Montanes won that match in 3 sets. Based on Fognini’s form in the second round, Montanes is likely to extend that lead to 3-1.

    Gilles Simon vs. Potito Starace

France’s Gilles Simon will take on the other Italian left in the draw, Potito Starace. Simon and Starace have met on just 1 other occasion on the main tour, way back in 2007. They have a more recent meeting at the Sunrise Challenger event in 2010, which Simon also won.

The No. 3 seed should find his way through to the semifinals. Starace is comfortable on clay, but Simon enjoys playing on slower surfaces as well. The Frenchman for the win in straight sets.
