Tournament seeds Mardy Fish and Kei Nishikori are safely through to the US Men’s Clay Court Championship, after recording straight-set wins over respective opponents Albert Ramos and Igor Andreev.
(1) Mardy Fish def. Albert Ramos 6-3, 6-4
World No. 11 Mardy Fish is through to the last eight, having ousted Albert Ramos 6-3, 6-4 Thursday evening. The 29-year-old American led 3-0 in the opening set, then built a 4-0 edge in set two. Fish was unable to close at 5-2, but regrouped to serve out the match in 93 minutes. He finished his effort with eight of 9 break points saved.
Fish is next to square off against 6th seed Kei Nishikori for a place in the semifinal.
(6) Kei Nishikori def. Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-3
Sixth seed Kei Nishikori reached the quarterfinal, following his straight-set victory over Igor Andreev Thursday afternoon. The 21-year-old broke serve at 4-3 in the opening set, then at 2-2 in the second. After missing three match points, Nishikori closed on a fourth at the 76-minute mark. He completed the day with three aces and three of 7 break chances converted.
