Gilles Simon will kick off his clay court season in Casablanca against Portugal’s Frederico Gil. Top seed Albert Montanes will also take the court on Thursday.
Gilles Simon vs. Frederico Gil
France’s Gilles Simon already has a win over Frederico Gil this year. The two men played for the first time in Sydney early this year; Simon won in easy straight sets. The good news for Gil is that they’re now on his favored surface of clay. The bad news is that Simon likes to play on clay too.
Simon is by far the more consistent of the two men. The Frenchman is ranked 23 in the world and he comes into Casablanca off a great run in Miami, where he made the quarterfinals. There could be a bit of fatigue at play for Simon, but he should have more than enough to get past Gil. Simon in straight sets.
Albert Montanes vs. Filippo Volandri
Italy’s Filippo Volandri got off to a good start in Casablanca with a solid win over France’s Julien Benneteau. Still, his second round opponent will be top seed Albert Montanes of Spain. Montanes is a good player on clay and the past year has been one of the best of his career.
He has a losing 1-3 losing record against Volandri, but the two men haven’t met since 2006 on the clay courts of Palermo, Italy. Montanes is playing better tennis at the moment than Volandri. Expect a win for the Spaniard.
