  • Baghdatis ousted in Casablanca, Andujar moves on

    4/7/11 4:32 AM | Cheryl Murray
Baghdatis ousted in Casablanca, Andujar moves on Marcos Baghdatis was upset at the hands of qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov, leaving the tournament without its No. 2 seed.

Andrey Kuznetsov def. Marcos Baghdatis 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

Nothing worked well for Marcos Baghdatis in his first round match. The Cypriot served at a dismal 35% for the match and was broken 5 times by world No. 244 Andrey Kuznetsov. The loss is the fourth consecutive for Baghdatis, who will head into the European clay court swing without a win since Rotterdam in February. For Kuznetsov, the win is his first ATP tour-level win of the season and only the third in his career. He will take on No. 8 seed Victor Hanescu.

Pablo Andujar def. Jeremy Chardy 7-6(6), 6-1

Spaniard Pablo Andujar got his European clay-court swing off to a good start with a win over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. The first set was competitive. Chardy had more difficulty on serve than Andujar, but each man managed to secure a pair of service breaks to force the tiebreaker. The Spaniard went in with the advantage; he had 8 chances to break Chardy’s serve in the set. The better player snagged the set and ran through the second for the straight set victory. Andujar will play Pere Riba in the second round.
