  • Injured Robredo now hitting again on clay

    4/6/11 3:40 PM | Johan Lindahl
Injured Robredo now hitting again on clay Tommy Robredo has returned to the practise court, spending time on his surface of choice, clay, after healing an adductor injury suffered at Indian Wells which kept him out of the Miami Masters

But the timing could not be better for the Spaniard, who is now preparing for Barca, which he won in 2004.

The clay classic has been the playground for home hitters in recent years, with Spaniards winning the last eight editions. That includes five in a row from Rafael Nadal 2005-2009, with Fernando Verdasco lifting the trophy a year ago in the injury absence of Rafa.

Robredo is on the dirt at his home club with the aim to "keep progressing to be in form for Monte Carlo," which is one week before Barcelona with an eye to being 100 percent fit for his home event.

"I'm very happy with the start of the year. I played a great pre-season which made me confident," said Robredo. "Things are going very well. Apart from the results, I'm satisfied with my game and most importantly enjoy playing tennis at the moment".

Robredo still remembers his own Barcelona title. "Winning a tournament is always something special, but winning at home means so much more. During the match I started realizing that almost everybody in the stands was supporting me.

"There were club members, family, friends,…, it's just very special", said the 28-year-old. "Of all the titles you can win, the Godó is the most beautiful one I'm sure. Playing and winning in front of your home crowd is an incredible feeling".

Robredo is bold enough to suggest that he has a chance for the quarter-finals at the upcoming edition, with Nadal due to return after missing last year with injury. "I really look forward to playing here, and I want to be fighting the top players. I think that I can reach the quarter-finals, but with Rafa in the draw, especially on clay-court, he is the favorite."
