    Chardy, Hanescu advance in Casablanca France’s Jeremy Chardy made a successful start in Casablanca as the clay court swing got under way on Monday.

    Jeremy Chardy def. Bjorn Phau 6-2, 7-5

    No. 6 seed Jeremy Chardy defeated Bjorn Phau in straight sets on opening day in Casablanca. The Frenchman earned a whopping 14 break point chances in the 2-set match, of which he converted 4. The match lasted an hour and forty minutes; Phau was able to secure a break of serve from Chardy, but it was too little too late for the German. Chardy will take on Pablo Andujar of Spain in the second round.

    Victor Hanescu def. Daniel Gimeno-Traver 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

    The first round match between Victor Hanescu of Romania and Daniel Gimeno-Traver was a study in service breaks. In their 3 sets of play, they combined for a total of 9 service breaks. Hanescu, who faced 17 break points, seemed to have a more difficult time on serve, but he fought off 13 of them. Gimeno-Traver went 5 for 10 on break points saved.

    Hanescu moves into the second round, where he will face either Nicolas Devilder or Michael Berrer.
