David Ferrer crushes fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers on Tuesday in Miami. Ferrer is joined in the quarterfinals by Tomas Berdych, a winner in a third-set tiebreaker over Florian Mayer.
(6) David Ferrer d. Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-2
Ferrer has been absolutely crushing people at the Sony Ericsson Open and Tuesday was no different. The sixth-ranked Spaniard, who has not dropped a set in four matches nor has he lost more than four games in any set, eased past Granollers after exactly one hour of play. Ferrer will face Mardy Fish on Wednesday for a spot in the semifinals.
Taking control right from the start, Ferrer surrendered four service points in the first set although he did have to fight off two break points. An ace on set point at 5-1 gave Miami's No. 6 seed the early edge. Granollers could not recover in set two. The world No. 55 won just three more return points and donated serve two more times. A final Ferrer forehand at 5-2 put a swift end to the proceedings.
(7) Tomas Berdych d. Florian Mayer 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(4)
Berdych had a far more difficult time booking his spot in the quarterfinals, but he managed to do it after two hours and 24 minutes against Mayer on Tuesday. The seventh-ranked Czech got off to a routine start by winning 15 of his 16 first-serve points in the opening set and saving the only break point he faced. Mayer, however, fought back in the second and dominated it 6-2.
A break at 5-2 allowed the 39th-ranked German to start the third with serve, and he held all six of his games. Berdych, though, responded well to the pressure of serving from behind and produced clutch holds to stay in the match at both 4-5 and 5-6. Miami's No. 7 seed had been racking up errors (43 in total) and double-faults (eight in total), but he raised his level in the decisive tiebreaker. He hit a great volley and had a fortuitous winner off the net cord on his first two service points and eventually cruised seven points to four. Next up for Berdych is world No. 1 Rafael Nadal.
