Robin Soderling overcomes Ivan Dodig in three sets to reach the Miami third round on Friday. Somdev Devvarman also advances by upsetting Milos Raonic.
(4) Robin Soderling d. Ivan Dodig 3-6, 6-2, 6-4
Soderling fought back from a set deficit and prevented a personal two-match losing streak by surviving Dodig in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Friday afternoon. The fourth-ranked Swede needed one hour and 59 minutes to advance and set up a showdown against either Juan Martin Del Potro or Philipp Kohlschreiber. Soderling lost to Kohlschreiber in the third round of this month's Indian Wells Masters.
After splitting the first two sets, Dodig struck for an immediate break in the third and quickly extended the advantage to 4-1. The underdog Croat, however, could not finish the deal. Soderling seized consecutive breaks at 2-4 and 4-4 before battling through a tough service game at 5-4 to clinch victory.
"First round is always very difficult," said Miami's No. 4 seed, who recorded just three aces and two double-faults. "Obviously I didn't play my best tennis today, but I'm still very happy that I won."
Somdev Devvarman d. (31) Milos Raonic 7-6(5), 7-5
Devvarman capitalized on a poor serving day from Raonic and pulled off the upset after exactly two hours of play in second-round action on Friday. A wild first set saw the unseeded Indian race to a 5-1 lead only to give back breaks at 5-2 and 5-4 despite having four set points in the 10th game. Devvarman also grabbed a 5-1 lead in the ensuing tiebreaker, but Raonic fought back to 5-5. After taking care of his service point for a 6-5 lead, Devvarman got a look at a second serve and took the set when his opponent netted a forehand.
Raonic raised his level in the second and broke for a 2-1 lead before extending it to 4-2. The 20-year-old Canadian, though, failed to hold on as he surrendered serve at 4-3. Both men then held until Raonic served to stay in the match for a second time at 5-6. Miami's No. 31 seed led 30-0, but Devvarman won the final four points and converted his first match point with a stunning backhand pass. The world No. 73, who fired six aces and benefited from seven Raonic double-faults, awaits either David Ferrer or Igor Kunitsyn.
