Ivo Karlovic fails to capitalize on his wild card as he goes down to Florian Mayer on Thursday in Miami. Mayer advances to the second round in straight sets.
Florian Mayer booked his spot in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Thursday night by dismissing Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-6(6). Mayer needed one hour and 14 minutes to set up a meeting with No. 20 seed Albert Montanes.
Karlovic was coming off a quarterfinal showing in Indian Wells, where he took Rafael Nadal to a third-set tiebreaker, but he got off to a slow start in this one. The 6'10'' Croat dropped serve at 1-1 in the first set with an errant forehand on break point, and he never came close to getting back on serve. Mayer dropped only four points in five service games and finished off the set with ease at 5-4.
The 39th-ranked German did similar work in the second, losing a mere four points in six service games plus a tiebreaker. Karlovic raised his level slightly and managed to play his way into the 'breaker. The world No. 153 recovered from an early mini-break with a backhand pass at 2-3 and a Mayer forehand miscue eventually led to set point for Karlovic on his own serve at 6-5. Mayer saved it, though, and then produced a brilliant forehand pass for 6-6 before clinching victory one point later.
Karlovic finished with 10 aces and no double-faults, but he won only three of 32 first-serve return points and never saw a break chance. Mayer wrapped up his effort with two aces and one double.
