American Ryan Harrison’s Miami bid was short-lived, as the 18 year-old was sent packing by German veteran Rainer Schuettler.
Ryan Harrison will have to wait a bit longer to boost his ATP ranking. The American wildcard was not able to keep up with the solid baseline play of Rainer Schuettler. The 34 year-old German is still ranked No. 87 in the world, making him the oldest player in the top 100.
Schuettler employed the perfect tactic against Harrison. He kept the ball deep and in play and allowed Harrison to error his way right out of the tournament.
The American served at 53% and only hit 2 aces for the match. Schuettler was able to take advantage by converting on 4 of 6 break point chances.
Joining Schuettler in the second round will be Janko Tipsarevic. The Serbian Davis Cup hero defeated Dutchman Robin Haase in straight sets.
The big-serving Haase has had difficulty in 2011 holding serve; Thursday was no exception. Tipsarevic weathered 10 aces from the racquet of Haase, and still had 9 chances to break serve. The Serb only converted on 2 of them, but it was enough for the straight-set victory.
