Juan Martin Del Potro kicks off Miami campaign with a routine win over Ricardo Mello on Wednesday. Somdev Devvarman also advances in straight sets.
Juan Martin Del Potro d. Ricardo Mello 6-4, 6-4
Coming off a semifinal performance in Indian Wells, Del Potro made a strong start to his Sony Ericsson Open campaign by dismissing Mello in one hour and 21 minutes on Wednesday afternoon. The 6'6'' Argentine won only six of 15 second-serve points and saved none of the break points he faced, but he still advanced to a second-round matchup with Philipp Kohlschreiber. It will be a rematch of their fourth-round encounter last week, which Del Potro won in two tight sets.
Mello provided some resistance in this Miami opener by fighting back from a break down in each of the two sets. Both times, though, Del Potro quickly restored order with additional breaks of his own. The world No. 51 served at 70 percent and fired three aces while double-faulting just once as he improved his 2011 record to a stellar 18-5.
Somdev Devvarman d. Potito Starace 6-2, 6-4
Devvarman, who reached the Indian Wells fourth round, also kept up his momentum by rolling past Starace in just one hour and nine minutes on Wednesday. India's top-ranked player got off to a dominant start, breaking twice in his first four return games and losing only six service points in the opening set.
When Devvarman broke early in the second, it looked like it was all over for Starace. Although the 47th-ranked Italian battled to get back on serve, Devvarman promptly struck again before serving out the proceedings at 5-4. The world No. 71 capitalized on four of five break-point opportunities en route to a second-round showdown against Milos Raonic.
