Roger Federer lost his No. 2 ranking to Indian Wells champion Novak Djokovic last week. The new world No. 3 now finds himself in Rafael Nadal’s half of the draw.
Roger Federer has lost three matches in 2011 – each of which has come at the hands of Novak Djokovic. In many ways, Federer’s No. 3 ranking and subsequent spot in the top half of the draw with world No. 1 Rafael Nadal might be a blessing.
Federer’s quarter is a relatively comfortable one this time around. The seeds in his section include Juan Monaco, Jurgen Melzer and Marcos Baghdatis, none of whom are playing particularly good tennis at the moment. Andy Roddick is the next highest seed in the quarter; Roddick sports a 2-20 record against the Swiss Maestro.
Short of a truly dismal performance on the part of Federer, he should reach the semifinals without much fanfare.
