A wide open third quarter of the Miami draw is headlined by Robin Soderling. The Swede, though, could be challenged by Juan Martin Del Potro, Milos Raonic, Stanislas Wawrinka, and David Ferrer among many others.
With Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer having seized a firm grip on the top three spots in the world, the "other" quarter of major tournaments is also going to be the most up for grabs. When the Sony Ericsson Open draw was revealed on Monday, that became true to an even greater extent.
Soderling's section is absolutely loaded with dangerous contenders, including Indian Wells quarterfinalists Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet, Indian Wells semifinalist Juan Martin Del Potro, Australian Open semifinalist David Ferrer, and on-fore Canadian Milos Raonic.
Interestingly, Soderling, Del Potro, and Philipp Kohlschreiber are in the same 16th of the Miami bracket after being in the same eighth of the Indian Wells draw. Kohlschreiber upset Soderling in the desert before falling to Del Potro in two tight sets, blowing a 6-1 lead in a second-set tiebreaker in the process. The German could again face Soderling in round three, but this time he would have to get past Del Potro beforehand.
Ferrer and Raonic are on a collision course for the third round, in what would be a rematch of an entertaining four-set contest two months ago in Melbourne. Raonic, who could open with Indian Wells fourth-round performer Somdev Devvarman, looks poised for revenge having won the San Jose title and reaching the Memphis final last month.
In addition to Del Potro, other unseeded contenders in this competitive quarter include 2010 Indian Wells champion Ivan Ljubicic and one of last weekend's Indian Wells doubles champions, Xavier Malisse.
