Swede Joachim Johansson has quit tennis again - for what he insists is the final time - after several starts at trying to revive a career which was blighted by injury over the years.
The exit of the big-serving "Pim-Pim," once considered a credible rival to Mark Phiilippoussis and a one-time boyfriend of Lleyton Hewitt's younger sister, will not help the Swedish Davis Cup team after the 28-year-old Johansson won a rubber earlier this month in a victory over Russia.
Johansson, once ranked ninth on the ATP, won titles in Marseille, Adelaide and Memphis and played a US Open semi-final in 2004. But the Swede finally announced he's giving up the game due to chronic injures, including an elbow and shoulder. He once fired 51 aces in a losing effort in the 2005 Australian Open.
Johansson and partner Johanna Westerberg, a Swedish golf pro, are expecting their their first child. The No. 537 Johansson told Swedish media he made the final decision to retire a week after the Davis Cup.
"The motivation is not there, I'm quitting immediately. I know I can beat all the best in the world but it does not matter when I am no longer passionate about doing it. It has dawned on me here that I'm done with this life," he told Svenska Dagbladet.
The exit of Johansson leaves No. 4 Robin Soderling as the lone Swede in the ranking Top 200.
