Roger Federer had a larger challenge than most expected, but was able to finally subdue Ryan Harrison 7-6 (4), 6-3.
The match could not have started off any worse for the young American as he double faulted twice and would fail to earn a point in the opening game of the match. The mood at the stadium was extremely cautious in the beginning as Federer has taken down many home challengers with little difficulty. After spotting Federer a 2-0 lead though, the American began to turn things around as he found his range from the baseline.
As the set went on Federer’s first serve began to disappear and Harrison’s high risk returns finally began to fall. Federer was often caught off guard by the brash returns and fearlessness of his opponent. Serving for the set 5-4, Federer would fall behind 0-40 and eventually lose the game. The crowd erupted perhaps a bit too premature as Federer would break back immediately.
Not to be outdone, Harrison would again take advantage of some poor serving by Federer and even up the match to take it to a tiebreaker. In the breaker both players would have opportunities, but after the young American missed a volley wide to lose the minibreak Federer closed the door on him to take the set 7-6 (4).
The second set saw much more focused serving from Federer. Roger won 77% of his service points in the set and served 65% first serve. After Roger raised his level, it became a bit too difficult a task for the American. Harrison’s forehand would become a liability in longer rallies as Federer worked over his court positioning. The 18 year old tried valiantly to fight his way to a third set, but it was not to be as he fell 6-3.
Roger Federer moves on Friday to face his doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka.
