  • Nadal, Djokovic due to drop in on Colombia

    3/16/11 2:54 AM | Johan Lindahl
Nadal, Djokovic due to drop in on Colombia Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will make a well-paid dash to South America for a Monday exhibition match in Bogota, Colombia, a country starved for an up-close view of top tennis talent.

The world No. 1 Nadal and third-ranked Djokovic will squeeze in the one-nighter in between the end of this week's Indian Wells Masters and the mid-week start in Miami of that Masters event.

Colombia features just one player in the Top 100, No. 44 Santiago Giraldo. The event is being called one of the most important for the sport in the South American nation.

Nadal and Djokovic are currently two of the most in-form players, with Djokovic looking for a third 2011 title in his third ATP tournament after winning the Australian Open and Dubai. Nadal has yet to lift a trophy this season but is showing his usual impressive form as he bids for a hat-trick of titles in Indian Wells, the first Masters 1000 of the season.

Nadal holds a 16-7 lead in the series, with the pair's last meeting a round-robin match won by the Spaniard at the 2010 London year-end championships.

I wonder how much cash is at stake here...Prob loads and loads, considering how it's squeezed in between IW and MIami....

I don't think it's the money, they are doing their bit to promote tennis.

This may not be the best idea though, I'm not sure of the dates exactly, but i don't think players get more than 2-3 days rest before Miami do they? Anyway, kudos to them, it's a lovely gesture for the fans.

Nadline, they are both great guys, but make no mistake. It's the money.

^^^^^Nahhhhhhhhh!

The appearance fee will be considerable, you can guarantee that.

Whether it's smart or not is another matter. It's not very far from Miami at all and I don't imagine the flight to Miami will be more than a couple of hours...on the other hand, they'll be using up an entire day's worth of time...and the courts and weather are SO different from IW....

Someone should tell them to bring their own bottled water to drink... We wouldn't want the top contenders at Miami sick...

It would be tragic if they picked up any stomach bugs.

Maybe he's doing it for Shakira.

As for Shakira, she has joined forces with FC Barcelona (her new boyfriend Gerard Pique's footbol team).
