The upsets continued on Monday, this time with Robin Soderling and Fernando Verdasco exiting the second quarter of the men’s draw.
Robin Soderling was not only battling a foot injury, but also illness as he went down in straight sets to Philipp Kohlschreiber. The Swede put in a valiant effort in the first set; he fought off 5 of 7 break points and though he clearly wasn’t moving well, he still managed to force a first set tiebreak.
Kohlschreiber started off the match playing quite badly. The German yanked his one-handed backhand long more often than it went in, but with Soderling not at 100%, he was able to find his way back into the match. The German finally took a one-set lead with a protracted first set breaker.
By the second set, Kohlschreiber was playing better, and the stats reflected his improved form. The German faced no break points, and though Soderling only dropped serve once, it was more than enough to give Kohlschreiber the upset win.
To make matters more interesting in this section of the draw, Fernando Verdasco was also dismissed in straight sets on Monday night at the hands of American Sam Querrey. The loss by Verdasco leaves Querrey at the No. 21 seed as the top player in this section of the draw.
Querrey actually played good tennis on Monday night, which given his performance for the rest of 2011 so far was no small feat.
The American will take on Tommy Robredo, who defeated American Donald Young in the third round.
