  • Del Potro impressive in win over Dolgopolov

    3/15/11 12:52 AM | Cheryl Murray
Del Potro impressive in win over Dolgopolov Juan Martin Del Potro is another step closer to a possible semifinal showdown with Rafael Nadal as he marches through the draw in Indian Wells.

Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro continues to impress as he stages a comeback from wrist surgery. The world No. 90 is now nearing the sort of form he enjoyed when he won the US Open in 2009.

His third round opponent on Monday was the rising new star from the Ukraine, Alexandr Dolgopolov. Del Potro got off to a strong start in the opening set; he strode out to a 4-1 lead quickly leaving Dolgopolov looking slightly out of sorts.

The Ukrainian pulled himself together to hold for 2-4, but Del Potro chugged right along for 5-2. Things moved along well for the Argentine until he tried to serve for the set at 5-3. From out of nowhere, Dolgopolov secured his first service break of the match to level the first set.

Dolgopolov forced a tiebreaker, but Del Potro pulled out the set anyway with a 7-3 scoreline.

Del Potro once again got off to a quick start in the second set. The Argentine raced out to a 5-1 lead, even though he served at a dismal 36% for the set. Dolgopolov, to his credit, was not done fighting. He actually secured another break of the Del Potro serve, but it wasn’t enough to claw his way back into the match.

Great win for Del Potro. He is hitting his groundies really well, but his serve is not back to his 09 level. Once his serve comes back, he will be very very tough to beat on a hard court. (even for the top players)
