Andy Roddick and John Isner advance to a third-round meeting in Indian Wells with wins on Sunday. Roddick beats James Blake and Isner takes out Ricardo Mello.
Andy Roddick and John Isner set up a rematch of their 2009 U.S. Open thriller by scoring respective victories in the BNP Paribas Open second round on Sunday afternoon. Roddick dismissed James Blake 6-3, 7-5 and Isner beat Ricardo Mello 6-3, 7-6(2).
For Isner, it was a much-needed victory as the 6'9'' American entered this tournament with a 4-5 record on the season. But he got an early break in the first set to take control and never faced a break point, firing 12 aces in the process.
Mello managed to force a tiebreaker in the second, also without having to save a break point, but the 30-year-old Brazilian went away quietly in the decider.
"I want to have a great result here," Isner said afterward. "I haven't been playing that well, and hitting the right shots at the right time has just been sort of a struggle. But I know coming here and playing on this surface and this environment is very good for my game. So this tournament, for me, is coming at the right time."
However, the No. 30 seed is not playing Roddick at the right time. Roddick extended his 2011 record to a whopping 15-2 by getting past Blake after one hour and 30 minutes.
The world No. 8 did not have the easiest of days on serve despite blasting 13 aces, but generated 15 break chances thanks to a stellar return game. Roddick converted one opportunity in the first and two in the second, the latter of which came at 5-5.
Blake, a wild card entry, was doomed by 51 percent serving and an inability to win points even when he put his first delivery in play (52 percent).
Roddick and Isner have faced each other on three previous occasions, with Roddick winning a pair of meetings at the Legg Mason Classic (2007 and 2009). Isner, though, scored a 7-6(3), 6-3, 3-6, 5-7, 7-6(5) upset in the third round of the 2009 U.S. Open.
