Novak Djokovic extends his perfect record in 2011 with an easy win over Andrey Golubev on Sunday in Indian Wells. Next up for Djokovic is Ernests Gulbis, a comeback winner over Yen-Hsun Lu.
Novak Djokovic kicked off his BNP Paribas Open campaign with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Andrey Golubev on Sunday night. Djokovic needed just 59 minutes to set up a third-round clash against Ernests Gulbis.
A dominant first set saw Djokovic win all six games with relative ease. Golubev, however, woke up in the second and struck for an early break. In the end, though, Djokovic regained control following a slight mental lapse and added two more breaks for victory.
Gulbis had a far more difficult time of things, as he required an improbable comeback over two hours and 10 minutes to dismiss Yen-Hsun Lu. Gulbis lost his way in a first-set tiebreaker, saved a match point on serve at 6-7 in the second 'breaker, and eventually survived 6-7(1), 7-6(7), 6-1.
Lu completely disappeared after losing a second set that featured wild momentum swings. The Chinese Taipei star eventually wilted amidst 19 Gulbis aces, while the Latvian won 49 of 58 first-serve points.
