Nicolas Almagro made the third round at the BNP Paribas Open, by virtue of his Saturday evening win over qualifier Michael Russell. The 11th seed is joined by Ivo Karlovic, who upset David Ferrer in straight sets.

Eleventh seed Nicolas Almagro leveled the series at 1-1 with veteran Michael Russell, having come through their second-round match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The Spaniard rallied from an early break in the first set to complete the match in 79 minutes. Almagro ended the evening with 9 aces and three of 11 break points converted.
He will take on compatriot Albert Montanes in the third round. The 23rd seed held on to beat Jarkko Nieminen in the second round, 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-6(2).
Ivo Karlovic def. (6) David Ferrer 7-6(3), 6-3
Ivo Karlovic is through to the round of 32, following his straight-set ousting of 6th seed David Ferrer. The 32-year-old, ranked World No. 239, held eleven of 11 service games through 96 minutes of play. Karlovic tallied 9 aces and 36 of 42 first-service points en route to his fifth victory of the 2011 season.
He is next to meet Gilles Simon for a place in the round of 16. The 28th-seeded Frenchman took out veteran Rainer Schuettler in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(5).
