Tomic battles into second round, Golubev rolls Bernard Tomic outlasts Rohan Bopanna in the Indian Wells first round on Friday. Tomic is joined in the winners' circle by Andrey Gulbev, who made quick work of Florian Mayer.

    (WC) Bernard Tomic d. (Q) Rohan Bopanna 6-7(5), 7-6(1), 6-4

Tomic battled back from a set down and eventually earned the only break of the match to beat Bopanna and reach the second round of the BNP Paribas Open on Friday evening. Saving break points was the key to the match, and Bopanna fought off four of them en route to a first-set tiebreaker. The 629th-ranked Indian took it seven points to five, then earned a pair of break chances at 1-1 in the second. Tomic survived that service game and held onto the momentum until the end.

Still, Bopanna forced another 'breaker in set two without facing a break point. Tomic, though, dominated it seven points to one before finally striking for a decisive break at 3-3 in the third. The 187th-ranked Australian took care of his next two service games to advance after one hour and 48 minutes of play. Next up for Tomic is No. 16 seed Viktor Troicki.

    Andrey Golubev d. Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-1

Golubev kept up his momentum from Davis Cup heroics last weekend and thrashed Mayer in a mere 44 minutes on Friday in the Indian Wells opening round. The Kazakh, who led his country over the Czech Republic with a five-set win over Jan Hajek and a four-set upset of Tomas Berdych, did not face a single break point and capitalized on all four of his own break-point opportunities.

Mayer, on the other hand, lost a five-setter to Marin Cilic in Davis Cup action. While the visiting Germans recovered to beat Croatia in five rubbers, Mayer did not exactly bounce back in the California desert. The world No. 36 won a shockingly bad 38 percent of the points when he even put his first serve in play. As a result, Golubev advanced easily to a second-round clash against world No. 3 Novak Djokovic.
